I began drawing and painting as a child, my love of nature leading me to study zoology and botany at university in Sri Lanka. After returning to Sri Lanka in 1968 after several years in England, I began drawing and painting the wild flowers of the island, though in a strictly botanical style. When I emigrated to Australia in 1976 I started using oils. My subject matter, at this time, included landscapes inspired by my childhood and years in Sri Lanka as well as the very different visual delights of Queensland and Australia. After an inspirational trip to Nepal in 1991, I returned to watercolour painting, which has been my main medium in recent years. In the 1990s I attended classes and workshops with a number of talented watercolourists, learning techniques from such artists as Rex Backhaus-Smith, David Taylor, Josef Zbukvic and others. I am a member of the Watercolour Society of Queensland, the Half Dozen Group and a foundation member and former president of the Queensland Art Collective Association. I have exhibited in numerous group exhibitions over the years, where I have sometimes been the guest artist. My paintings are in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, Europe, India and Sri Lanka. I have travelled widely and painted in Australia and overseas. You can see some of these paintings in my galleries on this site. |
